My students have structured discussion nearly every day. They might be about political philosophers (Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, and Locke to name a few), current events, different systems of government (a unicameral vs. bicameral legislature, for example), and other content-specific topics. In order to keep things fresh I like to vary the discussion strategy. One day might be an activity where each group of 4 students must write down their thesis statement for Federalist 10 and then present to the class. Another day might be a jigsaw where each group illustrates one section of a complex text and then teaches their classmates using their visual aid. Or they might make a poster outlining their design of a government for a mystery country about which they only received a brief, vague description. The easel pads are very useful and the colored markers provide even more options. I have also requested an electric pencil sharpener because the manual one currently in my classroom is from 2002.
