Understanding and talking about feelings is hard enough for adults, it's even harder for children. Adding to that pressure is the trauma that children face on a daily basis that impacts their learning in so many ways. My goal in having a social-emotional library for our school is for everyone to have a safe space to explore their feelings and find ways to handle those big feelings in appropriate ways. As educators, we know that children need a safe space, consistency, routine, and caring adults who value them as individuals to feel safe. When this need is met, then they are ready to learn. We have a lot of students in our school who come from disadvantaged families as well as suffering from a lot of trauma. I hope that this library will be a big first step in getting our students on the path to emotional resilience and success in academic learning.
