My students from Boston, Massachusetts attend a student-centered alternative education program. Our core values are ubuntu, critical consciousness and self-awareness. Most students in the program commute more than an hour to an hour and a half to get to school everyday, by public transportation. We constantly seek to engage students through community-based and culturally sustaining curriculum. Students in the program are typically over-aged and under-credited, many having been pushed out of traditional education systems. I am the guidance counselor and teach our Senior Humanities course and a Community-Based Participatory Research course. We work with local community run organizations on a weekly basis to engage students more in activism work being done throughout the city. We are currently focusing research on cooperative economics in communities of color in Boston.
