Learning is a multi-tiered process, that needs to be fed. Our students are learning machines that need to be given fuel to function properly. Servicing a Tier 1 school, students enter my class coming from various backgrounds. Some are well taken care of have a copious amount of food, clothes and other resources to get through their day without want. Then there are the students who have little to no food and rely on the school lunch and breakfast to eat on a regular basis. Everyday, I hear my students yearn for food . They ask , " Mrs. Muhammad do have any food or snacks , I'm hungry. I missed breakfast or lunch?" People just like machines need to have fuel , we cannot deny children their ability to function at their highest capability. One of the tiers of learning involve being coherent, active listening and some sort of eagerness to absorb information. When we are in the process of getting ready to learn, we train our brains to process the information being relayed. How can this small step be done if the primary focus is on how hungry I am. I want to relieve this want by providing some sort of nourishment. It has been seen on numerous occasions from teachers, students inability to show their ability do to a lack of food. They show signs of drowsiness, irritability, and are sometimes are confrontational. This can cause stress unless needs are met. Let's support our students and provide them with food they can use to help them function like a well oiled machine.
