Students look forward to the creating stage in the engineering design process. This step is the most rewarding because students bring to life their designs and see if their imaginations meet the criteria of a challenge. In my STEM lab, we mostly use recyclable materials and take apart our creations to reuse what we can. There are many engineering kits available for students to assemble, but I prefer having my students create models/prototypes by manipulating various materials. This helps develop their small motor skills, creativity, and critical thinking skills. The most used consumable material students need is masking tape. I also limit the amount of tape for each challenge as part of the constraints. We even have a tape wall to hold left over pieces of tape. I teach my students the meaning of recycling. Another, part of the engineering process is planning/designing. This is the reason for requesting is graph paper. My students use the graph paper to sketch their designs and they label and annotate how the materials will help meet the criteria. The rest of the materials (craft sticks, paper and more) will be used to continue engaging my students in problem solving challenges. My students have shown to be great engineers, and these materials will help enhance their 21st century skills.
