My classroom is filled with students whose curiosity, ambition, and range of experiences constantly surprise me. They are multilingual, culturally diverse young people who bring their families, histories, questions, talents, and dreams into the classroom every day. Nearly all come from low-income households, but I never want what they may lack in resources to define what we expect them to achieve. I teach students across several Advanced Placement courses, including AP Seminar and AP Research, where they are challenged to become more than successful students. They become researchers, writers, presenters, collaborators, and independent thinkers. They investigate questions that matter to them, wrestle with conflicting perspectives, learn to distinguish strong evidence from easy answers, and discover that changing one’s mind in the face of better evidence is a strength. What makes my classroom special is the seriousness with which we take their ideas. I want my students to know that their voices belong in academic conversations and that their questions are worthy of investigation. Some will be the first in their families to navigate opportunities like these, but every one of them deserves access to the tools, books, technology, and experiences that allow talent and hard work to flourish. Above all, I want Room 63 to be a place where students discover that knowledge is not something they simply receive. It is something they can question, investigate, create, and eventually contribute to themselves.
