My students really enjoy having books read aloud to them and then reading the books themselves. They fall in love with books and want to read them over and over! The repetition of reading books that they love improves their fluency and their love of reading. I have requested favorites from the lending library, but we only have those for 3 weeks and then have to return them. When we get a new book or 2 for our classroom library, my students get so excited because we get to keep it! My students would love to have books from their favorite authors as part of our classroom library that we can have long term. We live in a small district, so as a Special Education teacher, I often have students for 3 or 4 years. A variety of books keeps them engaged in reading and helps them find new books to fall in love with.
