I have the privilege of teaching a culturally and linguistically diverse group of 5th grade students most of whom come from low income households and are English Language Learners. Being a 5th grade student in it of itself comes with a lot of added academic responsibility and pressure (and this is all in addition to everything else going on in their lives!). As seniors at our school, my students are considered leaders to the rest of the student body and are expected to carry themselves as such. 5th graders also have to juggle the excitement and manage the emotions associated with their last year in Elementary School. This is such a pivotal year in my students' lives and I want to create a space where they can express themselves and foster the skills they'll need to succeed.
