This is my 13th year teaching, and my 8th year in Kentucky. For 2018-19, I will be moving from 2nd to 4th grade to "meet up" with the students I had when I first came to this school, and I am so excited! My students are FULL of potential. They face enormous challenges at home and within the community due to poverty, crime, unstable family relationships, etc... but they are able to achieve great things nonetheless! To be honest, when people find out I teach here, they make many assumptions about THAT school and THOSE children. What some outsiders often fail to understand is that OUR collective future depends on the success of these children. We have to be in this together! I love the underdog! Teaching children in challenging contexts makes me feel alive! I am a bit old-fashioned, and I have sky-high expectations for manners and behavior... but I also firmly believe school should be meaningful and FUN!
