Newtown High School has its name commemorating what was once Newtown, Long Island; but today is known as Elmhurst; Queens. A once rich farmland, Elmhurst now houses one of the largest and most diverse populations in the world. This neighborhood high school has a large population of Latino and Asian students, but has a notable Caribbean and Eastern European population as well. Yet in spite of its diversity, Newtown students are the once forgotten. In the past, many of the newer charter schools, the prestigious public schools, and the private schools in the area were receiving the praise and funding. Yet, over the past three years, Newtown has been labeled as a "Proficient/Highly Effective" school under the current N.Y.S. scoring system. With these positive evaluations, the students at Newtown have proven that they should not be ignored.
