Reluctant readers struggle with picking a book from the library. They worry about the length and often just go for the shortest pick. The most reluctant readers often like the books that I give them in my classroom during our independent reading time. I'm specifically trying to move them away from some of the easiest books, and challenge them to books that are a little more challenging. The Boys in the Boat is a great example of a book that students probably wouldn't chose on their own, but will love once they get into the stories in it. I've seen students caught up in the story and ask for the same book again the next day - students that I never thought would read, are actually reading. I want to fill my classroom shelves with great books that hook my readers.
