Many of my students leave school and go home to video games, television, and siblings for whom they are responsible until a parent can get home, leaving little time to play outside or focus on schoolwork. In an effort to combat the rising obesity rate in our state, our school became part of the Delta Garden Study. This puts our kids out in the garden during the school day and puts fresh produce in our cafeteria, but that is only half the battle. Students also need increased access to technology and STEM applications in the classroom, and hands-on activities that engage their minds in learning for the future that will be theirs to create and participate in. I would like to make my students' school experience a place where they not only learn science content, but learn also to apply it to their everyday life. I am not out to help a child pass a test, I am out to help them imagine and understand wonder.
