My students come from a second language, low income background. Many arrive in my classroom hungry for music, food, learning, and direction in life-skills. They have a desire to do well but, for the most part, need to be taught the skills to be successful. Many of their parents work two jobs. Many of their parents are unconcerned with their success in school. Regardless, my students have beautiful hearts and minds. Once they are given a chance, take the opportunity to build a family, or a community of musicians who work together, laugh together, and make beautiful music together. When I first started teaching there, the music room remained empty at brunch and lunch. Now, it is a gathering place. Students come in to work on parts of the pieces we are playing, to have lunch and socialize, and to come in out of the cold. When we perform for our student body and local community events, there is pride where there once was fear.
