Supplying my students with the Spanish language books they need to become successful, bilingual readers has become my biggest challenge. I have 4th graders whose Spanish reading levels range from Kindergarten to some who are on a 5th grade level. It's important to have books that meet ALL of my students where they are academically. For this reason, my library needs to be stocked with books that would capture and challenge the cornucopia of learners I teach. Providing low-income students access to an expansive Spanish library will not only support their growth, but might even inspire some hesitant readers to pick up a book. These books will offer my students a choice in literature that many of them have never had before in Spanish class. No longer will they have just 10 book choices to choose from on their reading level, but many more!
