Working in a low-income district, I see underserved children every day. These children rarely see examples or role models who mirror them in the national spotlight. That all changed on January 20, 2021 at the Inauguration of President Biden and Vice President Harris. Not only did they witness history being made with the first swearing in of an African American/Asian Woman as Vice President of the United States, They also witness an amazing young African American woman “raised by a single mother” capture the attention of the world. Amanda Gorman’s background story mirrors so many of the children in our school district. In conjunction with National Poetry Month, sharing this poetry with our children will be empowering and enlightening. Making Amanda Gorman’s poetry available to our students will not only enlighten and empower our students, but these books will also bring a more relevant perspective of poetry to our students as well. These books will go a long way in bringing hope and pride into their future. Not only is reading poetry a special gift, it builds both language and writing skills. These particular books will bring students the knowledge that great things are possible, seeing that someone like themselves has authored and been successful in these contentious and divisive times. With your donation each of the seven (7) K-12 schools in our district will receive copies of Amanda Gorman's poetry books to add to their library circulation.
