Lunchtime at Lexington can be chaotic, where students eat in shifts according to their grade levels. Disrespectful behaviors were common, with many discipline referrals to the office seen during this time. Lunchtime activities included use of the field, during which many disruptive behaviors tended to erupt. To alleviate this, the counseling team has provided students with the option of going to the auditorium during lunchtime to play board games, draw, or to relax during their playtime. Playing games help our students learn important life skills – working in a group, taking turns, problem solving, and expressing their feelings in a positive way. Expression through art can be a form of self-expression for our students who have been impacted by trauma, for they are able to heal through these activities in giving them the control they need. We are fortunate to have two counselors on site this year to help our students with their social and emotional well-being. However with a new counseling program, we are limited to funds which has been the challenge of implementing this lunchtime project in making it successful. We hope to engage students through play and art as an alternative in providing them with options during lunchtime. Your donation to this cause will help our students connect with others through play and expression.
