Many of the students that I teach do not have a working computer in their homes. If they do, it is shared with other members of the family, not allowing them for much computer use. The state of Florida is requiring students to use the computer for Reading and Math at least 60 minutes a week per subject. This is impossible given the circumstances which my students are dealing with.
I am planning on opening the classroom up for computer use in the mornings. This will allow students to put in the hours required and ensure success in the class. I will also be using the computers during the school day to enrich and enhance the curriculum by giving the students the opportunity to do research about different areas of study.
I feel that through this project, the students will make learning gains consistent with the growth needed to be productive the following school year. Orange County is a digital county, once they get to middle school and high school they will be using ThinkPads as part of their school day. These computers in class will also give them an advantage because it will give them more flexibility and fluidity when using the computers.
