Students will engage in weekly group read-alouds of age-appropriate books about a variety of topics related to emotions, such as handling anger and frustration, learning to ask for help when they need it, understanding their own emotions, and learning about their brains and how they work. These lessons will focus on specific skills needed for understanding emotions and problems that face each age-group, and build their emotional intelligence. They will be given the opportunity to cement what they've learned during the read aloud by completing fun worksheets and coloring pages. Speakers will be used to play 60bpm music, which research has proven to be effective in reducing stress, while they complete their worksheets. Each student will have a folder dedicated to the worksheets and other resources they receive, which will be housed in file boxes until they complete the program. Students with improved self-control and conflict management skills are significantly more successful later in life. Students who can't manage their big emotions have trouble focusing on academics; therefore, our students will not only benefit from this instruction emotionally, but academically as well!
