My class is made up of 24 5th graders that are eager to learn. Although they face many challenges outside of school, they are confident that school is a safe place and that they are there to learn many new and interesting things. Our school is 60% Hispanic, 38% African American and 98% of our students are eligible for free lunch. Many of my students do not have a computer at home and do not have easy access to a local library, being that the school's neighborhood has much violence and crime. 5th grade is a crucial year for students to learn to find that love for reading. With outdated books and (because of budget cuts) no library use, this will be a difficult task. Students need to see reading as a wonderful experience. If students learn to love to read, reading will not be something they have to do, but something they enjoy to do.
