The PATH Program provides a therapeutic space that functions as a “comfort room” for reflection and crisis de-escalation, as needed, throughout the school day. In Personal Growth class, students in the PATH Program engage in small-group Social and Emotional Learning activities to bolster social communication skills, adaptive coping, executive functioning, and life skills that can be used across the school, home and community settings. Access to Chromebooks and evidence-based Social and Emotional Learning materials is essential to bolstering positive mental health and academic outcomes for students with developmental and emotional disabilities. Personal Growth is a class for students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for Emotional Impairment. Students with high functioning autism spectrum disorder (ASD), anxiety disorder, depression, and/or psychiatric or emotional needs are assigned to the class. Technology and evidenced-based Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum materials are critical to their success at school community and post-graduation. Materials needed include therapeutic games and skills-building workbooks for adolescents and teens. Topics of focus included life skills, social skills, mindfulness, executive function, conflict and anger management, healthy relationships, and self-care. Materials will be used in individual counseling sessions and small-group/advisories each week. A key goal of this campaign is to de-emphasize that practice of students prioritizing their academic demands above mental health needs. With better technology and SEL materials in our therapeutic room, students can focus on both on days when it's too difficult to be in core classes.
