We are asking that each student be given the opportunity that so many of us take for granted. Putting a laptop in the hands of these children will, assist them in reaching their personal and academic goals. Students may take their portable laptops home to use for writing papers, and digitally return assignments to teachers. Laptops would soon be able to replace the old pencil and paper, help children navigate around and become familiar with the use of technology in the classroom. Early exposure to computers gives students the opportunity to learn how to communicate in the virtual world, how to properly search for information, and how to critically analyze and distinguish real, valuable information from biased, flawed information. Unfortunately, many households cannot afford home access, and overworked parents are too busy to sit with their children in a library to teach them to use the Internet, if the parents realize the value of such skills at all. These children will begin their school education already at a significant disadvantage from their peers. We are optimistic that such efforts will prove fruitful, and that disadvantaged children will not get left behind in the increasingly digital world.
