My students are from a high poverty area in a very large school district in Pennsylvania. Many of my students come from single-family homes and are often raised by another member of their family such as grandparents. They attend a community school where most students walk and rarely go within a few blocks of their home. Our school is a K-6 school serving over 900 students with limited staff and resources. Like many low income, low achieving schools reading is an area we always need to improve school wide. My students are exited, eager, curious and always wanting to learn more. They are exposed to little and are always interested in new ideas and full of questions. Many of them however are not interested in reading independently because they are often below reading level and have not found reading to be more than a task. They have few resources at home and school is often the only place they get to read.
