Each student has their own unique style of learning so why limit them to only one style of seating? It has been proven over and over again that flexible seating in a classroom improves student success. The balance ball, wiggle cushions and floor chairs will provide my students several options for sitting. Children need to move! It is unreasonable to expect a child to sit still in a desk all day and be productive. Flexible seating allows them to wiggle, rock and bounce which increases oxygen flow to the brain. Studies show this helps keep young minds more alert and focused. Since I am a resource teacher, I typically only have four to five students at a time, sometimes less, sometimes more. Students work independently with 1:1 or small group instruction from me as needed. Flexible seating will give multiple areas for students to work in and have their own space while encouraging them to share and take turns with different seating options. It also results in easier movement into cooperative learning groups or individual work stations. Most of all, flexible seating makes learning fun!
