I teach at a school in Maryland with an incredibly diverse student population. Many students come from low-income households, and we have a large population of English language learners. My students come from many different backgrounds and countries, but they all come to school to learn. Some of my students have home environments that may be challenging, but school can provide a structural support for those same students. Art not only helps students to think critically and creatively, it can help students express themselves and can INSPIRE students to succeed. Art is especially helpful to those students who struggle with the English language-- it gives them a subject to feel successful in during the school day. Middle school students are full of self-doubt, and I aim to build their self-confidence through art.
