These materials will allow students to model the methodology of bathymetric mapping, where researchers use current technologies such as sonar and laser mapping to create accurate maps of the seafloor. These supplies could be provided to a student for at-home learning if necessary. Most activities require a simple paper and pencil method, where students are provided with coordinates on one sheet, and then color in squares on another, resulting in a traditional two-dimensional product. While students will see the importance of this technology, they don't actually apply much critical thinking towards and within the activity unless specifically prompted. Students are also expected to learn about ocean floor features, but the same activities usually require them to label simple diagrams and hopefully remember them. By creating actual models of the these features, my students will have a relatable experience on which to reference.
