My students come from predominantly poor backgrounds. As such, they personally have little resources to contribute to their education. The limited access that they have to resources and experiences only help to widen the gap in achievement and put them at a disadvantage. The aim is to help my students move from a mindset of despair to one of hope, realizing that their situations can change through education. When I look around my classroom, I see future lawyers, doctors, postal workers, teachers, authors, artists, journalists, entrepreneurs, vets, service men and women. All they need is an opportunity of a rich start to counteract their situations. As their teacher, I want to help my students move from a mindset of "I can't" to "Why not me?" These children will realize that going to college is not so far fetched even if no one in their families have ever attended.
