Flexible seating gives students the opportunity to choose what works best for them. During independent work time, students are able to choose where they want to work. This year I was only able to purchase enough flexible seating options for two groups of students at a time. My students LOVE being able to choose their own spot to complete their work. Currently some students like to sit at the round table on ottomans, others prefer to stay at their desks with seat cushions, while the rest lay on the carpet with clipboards. Students have to rotate and take turns using flexible seating and regular classroom chairs. Funding this project will give enough seating options for my whole class to enjoy at the same time. Students will be using the floor cushions, wobble cushions, balance ball seats, and bean bag chair as seating options during independent work time. The wobble stools will be used at my teaching table during my small group instruction, as well as independent work time. Giving students the choice of choosing the seat that works best for them will help them stay focused and be comfortable while learning. Introducing flexible seating options in my classroom has motivated my students to stay on task and get their work done. They are able to choose a comfortable spot to focus on their work. As adults we get restless when having to sit in an uncomfortable chair for an extended period of time. Imagine how eight and nine year olds feel? If kids aren't comfortable, they're not going to be successful. Setting students up for success is my goal. Providing flexible seating options is one component in achieving this goal.
