My fourth graders attend a suburban public school. They are working very hard on one of their common goals: to reach high levels of literacy. I want to challenge them and keep them engaged by offering them exciting and motivational reading materials. My fourth graders are a racially diverse group of students. Many of them qualify for free or reduced lunch because they are economically disadvantaged. Some of my students are reading below grade level, as well as some who have special needs. For many, school is their sanctuary as home life may be a challenge. Amazingly, some perform so well that one would never know what they have had to overcome in their personal and home lives. Unsurprisingly, so many of my students have never had the opportunity to travel, take mini-vacations, visit a museum or even experience visiting the nearby suburban city. Many of their travels are limited to visiting nearby friends or relatives.
