I teach 10th-grade English & AP English Literature in Watts, perhaps most famous for the 1965 race riots. In blunt terms, my students live in staggering poverty. I have students who cannot afford basic school supplies, who miss school to stay home & care for their younger siblings while their parents work 3 jobs. However, we are also a community living & learning in hope. My students are incredible: full of joy & potential & love in spite of the violence of their surroundings. My classroom image's featured student poem (written by a young man who, once in a gang, is now taking all honors classes) sums it up best: "Judge me by how I look / My height, MY SKIN COLOR / The way my eyes look / Only 'cause I have tattoos / I'm now a HALF-WAY CROOK / People don't know my story / They haven't read MY BOOK / I wish I can / I know I could / But your insults / Always seem / To kill my hope." Consider giving us the gift of hope.
