I am a teacher librarian at an elementary school in Potrero Hill, San Francisco. The students at my school truly represent the racial and economic diversity of the city with almost equal percentages of African American, Asian, Latino, and white students as well as Filipino and Pacific Islanders. Much of our student population comes from the housing projects across the street from the school. Almost half of our students are social-economically disadvantaged with limited access to resources and supplies. About a quarter of the students are English Language learners and we are one of the few Mandarin Immersion elementary schools in the city. I also teach many students with special needs who need additional resources to support their growth and learning. My students deserve a 21st century education that is equitable to other schools around the city and country.
