One thing that almost all of my students can agree on is how much they love to read and write poetry. My students love to tell their stories and poetry helps them to organize and express their thoughts and feelings in dynamic and meaningful ways. During our poetry unit, the environment in my classroom becomes one that more than ever values communication and sharing. My students connect with each other so much more than they typically do during the school year. They love to share what they have written and found as well as hear what others have created with an intensity that I have not seen matched in my classroom.
