The 6th graders in my school are amazing! They live in the South Bronx and grow up in some of the poorest districts in the country. Many of my students are not native to the US or are first generation children. They are all extremely bright and talented, however they have not been given access to the resources and opportunities that many of their suburban peers have. Our school specializes in math, science, and technology. However, it is often a struggle to advance our students into the 21st Century because of the lack of technology available. The education gap is becoming a technology gap, and while my students have the talents and capabilities to engage in today's tech savvy society, they do not have enough opportunity to practice. Many of my students are also special needs and have difficulty with auditory processing. Instead the excel in situations where there is hands-on learning going on and they can create something meaningful.
