Screens and technology have their place in school, especially in a math classroom. However, after a life full of cell phones, social media and constant distractions, teenagers struggle to untether from their phones and focus on the class, the content and their peers. Many students experience anxiety when separated from their phones, not just because of the need to feel connected, but also because they fear the phones will be lost, stolen or broken. Moreover, a significant percentage of my students have learning disabilities that are exacerbated by the constant distraction and stimulation of social media. My solution? A classwide charging station! Students get to disconnect from their phones without worrying that they will be stolen or smashed. I get to stop tripping over phone chargers and start focusing on the easy part: teaching math!
