I teach in a Title I school, where 85% of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Many are first generation immigrants. Their parents work long hours to support their families, and are often not home to make sure their children do their homework and read (if there are, in fact, books in the home to read). Every year, it's a struggle. My students groan when it's time to read silently; they struggle through standardized tests. Their parents desperately wish they could help, but most don't know how. For many of my students, school is their only chance, yet our school's funding has been cut, over and over again.
