My second grade students come from a very low-income Title 1 school in Florida where over 90% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. These children are very eager to learn, but are often not provided with texts that they can keep and read at their homes because every dime their parents make goes towards food and basic necessities. Scholastic News Magazines are very engaging and student friendly, plus each student has magazines that they can take home to read and share! Many of my students' parents only speak Spanish and they themselves are learning English as their child brings home material to read and share together. The Scholastic Magazines are the perfect material to use because they are so engaging and the text progresses in difficulty throughout the school year, helping the students to grow as readers.
