I am lucky enough to have access to four desktop computers within my own classroom. The students and I use them on a daily basis, from completing online interactive quizzes, to working on research projects and more. Students frequently take advantage of free online resources, such as Google Docs, to offer and receive feedback, to submit assignments, and to further their own learning. Technology allows me to tailor my reading lessons to each student's individual need and to provide targeted support with far greater ease and speed than traditional means. However, the problem is that four desktop computers are simply not enough for the number of students in my classes. It takes a long time to rotate each computer to every single student, which can lead to less instructional time. I am also unable to physically move around the desktop computers, which can be a problem for those students who would benefit from being away from crowded areas. By donating to our project, my students will have more access to great online tools and be better able to focus and complete assignments, which will ultimately help to increase academic achievement. Students should be free to take advantage of what it means to be a 21st century learner. Having more access to laptops will allow me to give them the tools they require to be well-equipped for the world of tomorrow.
