I want my students to feel safe in my classroom. Safety is foundational to all other academic pursuits-- including the service projects my students will develop to pay it forward! Many of my students have not been in a classroom since March 2020. Half are not old enough to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. With the Delta variant spreading locally families are concerned about the safety of in-person learning, yet they know the academic and social-emotional challenges of distance learning. Help my students not only to feel safe, but to excel when they return to the classroom, by helping me to create a safe and literature rich environment. I am requesting an air purifier because, “when used along with other best practices recommended by CDC... [air] filtration can be part of a plan to reduce the potential for airborne transmission of COVID-19 indoors.” (EPA) When selecting an air purifier I followed EPA guidance. In addition to the key benefit of removing COVID-19 from the air, the presence of the air purifier will help students and their families feel safe and know their health is my primary concern. Once students feel safe, they are ready to learn. Assessments indicate the majority of my students struggle to comprehend informational texts. Service learning is the perfect vehicle for introducing informational texts because it is these texts that report community challenges. When students are able to read about an issue while having the opportunity to actually jump in and problem-solve that issue in real life… that is the ultimate context for comprehension. And, when my students are able to appreciate the gift of an air purifier and informational texts and pay it forward by helping in our community-- the sense of efficacy, of knowing they are capable of creating positive change, that will be transformative!
