This is my first year at the high school level, teaching World History as well as leading my Read our World book club class. I am seeking help to fund my vision to create a rich environment that engages my students in often "boring" history material through dynamic learning experiences. Further, I want to provide meaningful and deep literary experiences with my Read our World elective students. Therefore, I am focusing on acquiring a few essential classroom items and an amazing wealth of diverse literature. With these resources, my students will be transported across the world, through time, to alternate universes, and back into their own neighborhood. I am so excited to go on this journey with my students. Every morning, Read our World will meet first focusing on mirror novels with main characters and situations that reflect similarities from my students. This portion will begin with a whole class read of the astounding "Dear Martin" by Nic Stone followed by student choice book clubs of the other mirror novels. Then, we will read window novels led by a class study of "Refugee" by Alan Gratz that follows three children escaping violence in 1994 Cuba, 1933 Germany, and 2015 Syria. After this read, students will have another choice book club of window novels highlighting other identities, experiences, and possibilities. With two new courses, a new school, a new district, and a new age group, this year will be a challenging one. I am so excited to take on this challenge with your support!
