Access to computers will help my students practice research skills on a regular basis, have more choice in their projects and project outputs, and give kids writing supports. Learning how to Google is hard! Kids need guidance and support on key terms, and then sifting through all the information. This is hard to do with the limited access to the internet and it's a key life skill. Talking to kids about bias and accuracy in reporting is a vital part of helping create a new generation that is media literate. When students can browse news sites as we learn, and come up with their own examples of bias and mixed messages, that gets buy-in from the class as they see they can use their new skill right now! Some students benefit from the extra support of a word processing program. Whether it's the proofreading, the speech to text aspect, or developing fine motor skills, having a platform to create their own text can really give kids a boost in confidence.
