The Coding BFF's (a Coding & Computer Club) at our elementary school is a way to introduce these 7-11 year-old girls to careers; both those that focus primarily on technology, such as computer programming, and those that use a large amount of technology, such as engineering. The 20 member technology club and I have the opportunity to learn new skills and transform our thinking. Together using CSFirst, a free computer science curriculum that makes coding easy to teach and fun to learn, we can create through learning challenges that require no advanced knowledge of a coding program. While creating and designing through hands-on learning, we will read together and discuss the book, Sasha Savvy Loves to Code by Sasha Ariel Alston. I chose this book because Ms. Alston is an African American female majoring in Information Systems. She wrote this book to inspire other girls to explore the world of coding and technology. They'll hopefully see themselves in her and be encouraged, motivated and excited. We will also establish girl bonds and leadership skills through technology and the Leader in Me (7 Habits). Our school is a Leader in Me school and this project and our journey allow the girls and myself to "find our voice" (habit 8). I am hopeful new talents and strengths will be discovered using technology of the future! I know I definitely will! I expect through this learning journey they (we) will grow to learn how to seize opportunities, serve and help out their peers and friends who may inquire about their projects, and lead the way towards their place in the world!
