My students are a diverse group of 13-15 year olds who come from all parts of the world. Many of my students are English Language Learners who are still working to become fluent in English. I also have a large number of extremely bright students who are eager to be challenged academically. A large percentage of our student population lives at or below the poverty level, and school is an escape from a less-than-perfect home life for many of them. My school puts a large emphasis on the use of technology, which to me makes the opportunity to find and fall in love with a physical book even more important. As a reading teacher, the best part of my job is sharing my love of books with my students. Reading is not only enjoyable, but builds fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary skills.
