"How many of us can remember discovering a book that touched our lives?
I'm talking about THAT BOOK, the book that speaks to your soul, the book that holds up a mirror and helps you discover what it means to be a human."—Ms. K (a fellow teacher)
I am a first-year 5th-grade reading and writing teacher and I'm very excited to aid in the appreciation for reading and writing in my students' lives. In an ideal school year, I want my students to have access to books by BIPOC authors who write stories with gripping narratives and characters that affirm the identities of my students.
Many charter schools lack a central library for students to check out books, and my school is no exception. The classroom is the only space on campus for students to select books for independent reading. Literacy studies suggest that for every one student, there should be 20 books to choose from—that's about 600 books per classroom!
I am building my classroom library from scratch. With your help, the students I teach this year and in years to come will be able to see themselves in the stories they read and hopefully find that one book that they'll remember forever.
