Each year, my fifth graders and I turn this old swamp (my Shrek-themed classroom) into our second home together. It is important for me to make my classroom a safe place for my students to feel accepted and loved. The relationships I build with my students is by far the most important thing for me, and it is the key factor behind getting them to make big academic gains too. In our classroom, students get the opportunity to become the "Ogre Achiever" of the day. For this highly sought after award, Shrek chooses a student who has gone above and beyond classroom expectations. By promoting a positive learning environment where students cheer each other on every day, we build a strong bond in the swamp.
