Literacy growth should be expanded and encouraged beyond the ELA classroom! We will begin by reading through the book Chasing Vermeer in small groups, discussing the different mathematical themes and patterns my students see in the story along the way. As they read, I will introduce them to pentominoes, just like the ones used by Calder in the book. These puzzle pieces help students understand symmetry, area, and perimeter. I want to see my students develop into comprehensive and curious learners who seek knowledge and growth in every aspect of their lives. Incorporating literacy into my mathematics classroom has been a goal of mine for a while and Chasing Vermeer is the perfect opportunity to put that in action! With this book project, I hope to see my students build their academic confidence by strengthening their literacy skills, and expand their thought process in problem-solving by exploring shapes and patterns with pentominoes.
