My students are wonderful, hardworking, and eager-to-learn 3rd graders, who love when it snows, and love singing, and love hearing stories read aloud. Unfortunately, they attend a large school in an urban neighborhood, with over 1000 students in all, and many classrooms with 30 or more students each. All of my students are also English Language Learners - many of them arrived in kindergarten knowing little (if any) English - and the majority come from low-income families, so they often have very few books at home and parents who speak only Spanish and are busy working multiple jobs. As a result, nearly a third of my third graders are reading at or below a first grade reading level, even though they love books and want to be able to read.
