My students are located in the borough of Queens, New York. Their demographics range from living in lower income to upper income families. Their ethnicity's range from White, Black, Asian and Hispanic. I am fortunate to teach 8th graders that even though are angst ridden with their preteen problems, still are eager to learn. The best part of the day is probably when the unexpected occurs, and you can blatantly SEE the lightbulb go off over their head when an unexpected realization occurs. I particularly enjoy teaching this pre-high-school age group because they really do have a lot to say. It is crucial to create a safe learning environment, and when one does, the kids really find that no question is "wrong"and all inquiries are taken seriously. Of course, there are the lighthearted moments in the day as well - moments where a teacher's anecdotal are worked into a lesson, or a shy student decides to share work.
