There is a lot of complex vocabulary in this book. Not only will they learn some great new words to add to their personal word banks, but they will also learn the history of the not-so-distant past that affected so many lives. One theme of this book is how one person's choice can affect so many others. Had the father not gone to look for work in West Berlin, the family would not have been separated. The family's outcome could have been so different. The value of teaching history through this book cannot be underestimated. It makes the post-World War 2 world a little more accessible to students born in the 21st century when they realize a child their age was doing everything she could to reunite her family, even after everyone else seemed to give up. I am requesting 25 books because I want a classroom set. This year I have 21 students in my classroom, but I intend to use this set over and over each year.
