I'm going into my second year and have had the immense pleasure of teaching my first dynamic group of strong minded individuals. It truly is incredible to see tomorrow's leaders and visionaries blossom right before my eyes. Teaching Cambridge students from a low income area is a joy in itself, but I think the most remarkable thing about them is their drive for success. Never have I seen students more self motivated or giving. They give their all to the course each and everyday, whether it be analyzing historical documents, freestyle rapping to learn poetry, or debating like some of our Founding Fathers. They are not only responsible for motivating themselves, but each other- and never falter. The communities and "families" that have been fostered throughout my classes are each so different, and so distinct. I use groups in my 8th grade ELA courses to encourage discussion and analysis of the curriculum material. We are completely tablet based and I believe the shift in classroom dynamic will positively impact the students. I frequently use round table discussions, sit on the floor, have everyone run to corners, etc. I would love a classroom as creative and multifaceted as my students, with enough space to inspire new ideas from their shifting environment everyday.
