In my art classroom at Lighthouse Elementary in East Oakland, creativity overflows from every corner. Students eagerly rush in, their eyes lighting up as they see brushes, paints, pastels, and clay waiting for them. The room buzzes with excitement as they experiment with colors, shapes, and textures, often cheering when it’s time for art and asking for “more time!” when class ends. Each project is a chance for them to express their unique voices—whether it’s bold paintings, imaginative collages, or carefully crafted sculptures. My students love art because it gives them freedom, joy, and confidence, and I love watching them encourage each other and celebrate their creations. Art in our classroom is more than just making; it’s a safe space where students feel seen, inspired, and proud of their talents.
