Our Art Dept's slogan is "Art is Native!" The school is a public, charter, K-12 research school on the edge of a capital city. The students come from a surrounding 8 counties, largely rural farm land and forest. The school purposefully attracts a socio economic mix to mirror the state's population. In addition to teaching high school art, I am the co-sponsor of the Life Savers club. This is a group of student mentors trained to recognize and assist other students exhibiting stress or depression. They are trained when to seek assistance from an adult in order to better assist a peer. As one of the arts educators, I have been working hard on researching artist journals as a form of self expression and discovery. I have found the process to be a very therapeutic outlet for teens and adults. This grant will further my artist journal program to a wider group. Journals are a safe outlet for dealing with personal issues.
